Martine Gutierrez talks about ANTI-ICON, her project commissioned by the Public Art Fund. In a series of ten photographs installed on bus shelters throughout New York, Boston, and Chicago, the artist embodies historical and mythological figures using improvised props and costumes. In a conversation with Public Art Fund associate curator Katerina Stathopoulou, Gutierrez describes placing her images in the context of everyday city life, while using the language of advertising to undermine the power and ubiquity of marketing.
