Contested Sites of Memory: A Performance with Artist Carrie Mae Weems took place at the Institute of Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond in 2024. Weems, who convened the evening, acted as host and spoke about how we memorialize the past and make sense of its losses and triumphs. Blending live music and spoken word paired with projected video, the event included performances from local choir Destiny One and nationally celebrated musicians Nona Hendryx, Jawwaad Taylor, and Craig Harris; and poets/writers Carl Hancock Rux and Esther Armah.
