In connection with the major survey of his work at The Hayward Gallery in London in 2023, Hiroshi Sugimoto talks with Hayward Gallery Director Ralph Rugoff about many of the series in the show. Among the topics they discuss are the origin of Sugimoto’s preference for working with black and white film, how his photographic approach is driven by ideas, and the inspiration Sugimoto has found in artists ranging from Ansel Adams to Marcel Duchamp.
