In an audio recording from MoMA, Carrie Mae Weems discusses From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried, calling the series an intervention in the way Black Americans have been depicted in American photography. She describes the series as “one of the more painful pieces that I’ve made,” but adds that the work also includes the hope that “our mutual humanity will be understood and embraced.”
