In connection with her 2025 exhibition Frames per Second (Silent) at the Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York, Liz Deschenes spoke with curator Phil Taylor. The pair discuss the development of the exhibition, the threads of Deschenes’s practice that it brings together, and how the artist conceives of her ongoing investigations of the histories of photography and film. Deschenes describes her affection for the dye transfer process, her study of the history of the the materials of photography, and her interest in “photography not as a metaphor but as the thing itself,” Deschenes notes, “not a stand-in for anything else.”
