Richard MisrachRebecca Solnit writes about Cargo

In an essay in Aperture, Rebecca Solnit writes about the layers of meaning—historical, political, geographic, ecological—in Richard Misrach’s series Cargo, depicting ships in the San Francisco Bay. Solnit describes the natural history of the bay, and the role of the industry in a larger web of global commerce. “These ships carry specific burdens, but they also transport the burden of the industrial age’s consumption and production and its impacts,” she notes.
