A video from KQED Arts examines the obstacles San Francisco photographer Carleton E. Watkins overcame to create his famed images of the American West. In an interview with Elizabeth Kathleen Mitchell, curator at Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, where Watkins’s work was on view in 2014, Mitchell notes that Watkins was “pushing photography into the realm of art before others were willing to think about it that way.”
