New Documents: Fifty Years Later

In a 2017 video from the Museum of Modern Art celebrating the 50th anniversary of the museum’s landmark New Documents exhibition, Sarah Meister talks about her research for the book Arbus Friedlander Winogrand: New Documents, 1967, published 50 years after the show opened. The original exhibition, organized by John Szarkowski, then director of MoMA’s Department of Photography, featured Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander, and Garry Winogrand, singularly important artists of the 20th century who were largely unknown at the time.

Meister’s introduction is followed by a panel discussion moderated by art historian Rob Slifkin and featuring artists Max Kozloff, Tod Papageorge, and Martha Rosler.
