Fraenkel Gallery is pleased to announce the publication Elisheva Biernoff, the first monograph devoted to the artist’s work. The book reproduces 14 of Biernoff’s paintings of photographs at actual scale (about 4 x 4 inches each) and in extraordinary detail. Painted on thin sheets of sanded wood, each of Biernoff’s works are made without the aid of magnifiers, grids, or mechanical aids and require approximately two to three months to complete.
Biernoff studied painting at Yale University, Slade School of the Arts in London, and at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. The subjects of her paintings are anonymous photographs of strangers and landscapes, in which she pays close attention to the overlooked and undervalued. Because Biernoff studies every conceivable attribute of these discarded snapshots in order to create her paintings, she pays them far greater attention than the photographers who originally made them. The works are grounded in the belief that every detail carries significance.
