In a 2023 video created by the artist’s studio, Hiroshi Sugimoto works in the darkroom to create the images in his Brush Impression series. In it, he demonstrates the process of making these unique calligraphic works, dragging a large brush dipped in developer or fixer across the surface of silver gelatin paper to create Japanese characters, and then briefly exposing the paper to light before processing it in chemical baths.
