Sophie Calle: Picasso in Quarantine
As part of a 2023 exhibition at the Musee Picasso commemorating the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death, Sophie Calle presented photographs of paintings kept covered by paper and linens during lockdown. These images reckon with Picasso’s legacy and memory, in tandem with Calle’s own work and possessions filling three floors of the museum. Calle described seeing the pieces in isolation as “a ghostlike, less intimidating presence that I immediately photographed.”

Often employing methods of surveillance and exploring the idea of privacy in her work, Calle also utilizes “ready-made” images to address these themes. In her series Cash Machine, photographs are made from ATM video surveillance footage, and each work is exhibited as a sequence of two to eleven images.

Sophie Calle: Série Noire
Encasing found pulp novels in vitrines, Calle recontextualizes lurid paperbacks with a series of questions ruminating on grief. Following formal and thematic motifs present throughout the artist’s oeuvre, Série Noire is textual and investigative–a playful series that knowingly embraces kitsch.

Sophie Calle: Because
Sophie Calle: Because
This work is part of Calle’s ongoing exploration of the relationship between narrative, memory, and photography, and mixes humor and melancholy with her particular eye for irony. In each piece, a felt curtain embroidered with Calle’s writing conceals a hidden photograph behind it. In presenting viewers with the text before the picture, Calle upends the usual order in which images are read.
