Fraenkel Gallery is pleased to present Boulevard—a slipcased, oversized book containing thirty-eight unforgettable new photographs. From 2008 to 2010 Grannan roamed the streets of Los Angeles and San Francisco, photographing the strangers whose faces, bodies, clothing and gestures comprise the primary subjects of Boulevard. Grannan’s people were those whom others pass by with little notice, people for whom life had apparently not been easy.
Grannan photographed her chosen subjects in front of the white stucco walls that can be found anywhere. She preferred a strong midday light which, in tandem with the walls, transformed her city streets into outdoor studios. The light is precise and indiscriminate, describing in high-pitched detail Grannan’s hustlers, dreamers, outcasts, addicts and beauty queens. The timeless characters who populate Grannan’s Boulevard are a compendium of street types rendered with mesmerizing intensity, separated from their counterparts of past centuries by little more than costume or hairstyle.
