In Peter Hujar: Gracie Mansion, Fraenkel Gallery recreates one of the most significant exhibitions of Hujar’s lifetime. In 1986, New York’s Gracie Mansion Gallery presented 70 photographs by Hujar, including portraits of friends and fellow artists, nudes, landscapes, and photographs of animals and abandoned buildings. Hung in a long grid two rows high, the exhibition freely mixed genres and subjects, creating a sequence that encouraged multiple associations. Fraenkel Gallery revisits the exhibition, presenting a version of the original layout.
