Peter Hujar: Art Basel Unlimited

Fraenkel Gallery in collaboration with Ortuzar is pleased to present Peter Hujar: The Gracie Mansion Show. The exhibition recreates the now-legendary exhibition that took place in New York’s East Village in 1986, one year before the artist’s death. For the show, Gracie Mansion Gallery exhibited 70 photographs including portraits of friends and fellow artists, nudes, landscapes, and pictures of animals and abandoned buildings, with genres and subjects freely intermingled. This exhibition presents a version of the original 1986 layout, offering contemporary viewers a chance to experience Hujar’s work as he conceived it. The non-hierarchical sequencing encourages open-ended associations and allows for rare insight into how Hujar understood the relationships between his images. A version of the exhibition originated at Fraenkel Gallery in 2025 and traveled to Ortuzar earlier in 2026.
