Bernd & Hilla Becher: Typologies

The artists’ most immediately recognizable work, the typologies group several photographs of a single category of industrial structure, such as cooling towers or blast furnaces. Presented together in a grid, subtle variations emerge among these homogeneous structures.

E.J. Bellocq: Storyville

Made around 1918, Bellocq’s beguiling photographs of women remain as enigmatic as their maker. His subjects are posed relaxing in domestic and outdoor environments, sometimes nude, sometimes with faces obscured by intentionally damaged photographic emulsion. Apparently unknown during the artist’s time, the negatives were found and subsequently printed by Lee Friedlander.

Lee Friedlander: Signs

Since the early 1960s, Friedlander has focused on the signs that inscribe the American landscape, from hand-lettered ads to storefront windows to massive billboards. Depicting these texts with precision and sly humor, Friedlander’s approach to America transcribes a sort of found poetry of commerce and desire.

Christian Marclay: Snapshots

Photography has been an integral element of Marclay’s practice since his earliest years as an artist. Hiroshi Sugimoto: Opticks

These images depict the color of light Sugimoto observed through a prism in his Tokyo studio. Using Polaroid film, the artist recorded sections of the rainbow spectrum projected into a darkened chamber, paying particular attention to the spaces and gaps between hues. The resulting works, each measuring approximately 5’ framed, are vivid, near-sculptural renderings of pure light.

Sophie Calle: Because

This work is part of Calle’s ongoing exploration of the relationship between narrative, memory, and photography, and mixes humor and melancholy with her particular eye for irony. In each piece, a felt curtain embroidered with Calle’s writing conceals a hidden photograph behind it. In presenting viewers with the text before the picture, Calle upends the usual order in which images are read.

Diane Arbus: in the beginning

In 2016, The Met Breuer presented in the beginning, a landmark exhibition of Arbus’s early photographs from the first seven years of her career, from 1956–1962. These 35mm pictures had previously been presented in a supporting role to her later, iconic images. The show and accompanying catalogue marked the first time many of the images were ever seen.

The publication of Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph in 1972—along with the related posthumous retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art—offered the general public its first encounter with the breadth and power of her achievements. The response was unprecedented.

Diane Arbus: Revelations

Diane Arbus Revelations was organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2003 and traveled to museums in the United States and Europe through 2006. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue offered the deepest exploration to date of Arbus’s career and her impact on photography.

Diane Arbus: Untitled

The images from Untitled were made at residences for people with developmental disabilities, places Arbus repeatedly returned to for picnics and dances, and at Halloween between 1969 and 1971, the last years of her life. “These photographs… can’t be confined by critical categorization, because they are purely ecstatic; they are the pictures Arbus had been waiting all her life to take,” wrote Hilton Als. “It’s as if the most remarkable images she produced in the early sixties … were faint talismans leading Arbus to this final study, in which her justly renowned control cannot compete with the unconscious power of her subjects.”
